Why There’s Nothing Manly About Getting Drunk
The age old traditional image of what it is to be a ‘real man’ often involves a smoky bar without a woman in sight, where men can go to drink beer, chain smoke, and talk about sport. We see this image in our favorite nostalgic movies (yes, I’m looking at you Gremlins) as well as in commercials, and other forms of advertising. What we rarely see in this image though is those same manly men rolling around on the floor drunk: and that’s because real men don’t get wasted. The Statistics Surrounding Binge Drinking Drinking might well be a rite of […]
Battlefield 1 Rekindles World War 1 History
For the first time in a while, we have a first-person shooter video game out that brings the best graphics and killing that is WW1. But in all honesty, it comes nothing to the amount of death, rather, senseless death. How it Began Think about how the War started, fate stepped in. A group of plotters including Gavrilo Princip in a conspiracy to assassinate Arch Duke Ferdinand gathered along a parade route in Serbia. The Arch Duke was visiting to see military maneuvers in Sarajevo. They throw a bomb, it explodes and hits the car and bounces off, hits the next car […]

An Interview with Owner of Tryablade.com
I had a chance to chat with Jason of Tryablade.com as I had recently been turned onto the site to quickly and easily sample a large number of different double edge razor blades. The speed of shipping and great customer services prompted me to follow up with him and have a quick interview on the site and how it came about. How did you come up with the idea of tryablade.com ? When I started wet shaving, I didn’t know what blades to buy, so I bought a sampler from a web site that contained about ten full packs. […]
10 Manly Things to Do in the New Year
As we ride into 2015 you might be trying to come up with the age old new years resolutions. Some choose to lose weight, others to stop smoking, others to get in better shape. But if you’re interested in doing something different than the usual assortment of things, try something different on. Do this list. 1. Learn how to change your own oil, or your air filter, some sort of maintenance on your car. You’ll feel accomplished, even if a little bit. 2. Watch all 23 James Bond Movies. Seriously, have you watched all of them in order? 3. Buy […]
Of Men and Lawyers
Man must cease attributing his problems to his environment and learn again to exercise his will — his personal responsibility.” –Albert Schweitzer,German philosopher, musician, theologian and physician I recently read a story that Mike Rowe described between himself and some lawyers about posting the picture of a shop lifter. The convenience store owner was continually plagued by shop lifters even with his camera going catching them in the act. He started posting pictures of the shop lifters and the amount of theft slowed down dramatically. But that’s not the problem. The problem was the two lawyers who were […]
Why you should visit your local cigar shop or tobacconist
With continuing crushing regulation including the FDAs attemps now to regulate cigar and pipe tobacco (premium tobacco) as opposed to cigarettes, now more than ever its important to support you local tobacconist shops. There are some things you just can’t buy online to get a feel for it. Ie, buying a box of cigars in bulk online may save money but what happens when you get that box and you hate the cigar? Tobacconists are great places to go just to ask the question – “hey how’s this cigar? have others liked it? Do you like it?” You can get […]
Pipe Smokers Live Longer…
Few people know the real details about the differences between cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. Most are just bombarded by anti-smoking messages on a daily basis that lump ALL smoking into the same bucket. So allow me to provide you with a bit of information about those differences. The premium tobacco that is grown for cigars and for pipes is generally alkaline based. Because of this you don’t inhale pipe smoke or cigar smoke. Cigarettes are from a varietal of tobacco plant that is more acidic based — thus you can inhale it into your lungs where you absorb 100x the amount of […]

I heard the ad on the radio and thought it was a joke. But the Dollar Shave club is no joke. For a dollar, or if you’re feeling squirrely $6 or $9 a month you can get primo razer blades shipped to your door – and the handle for free. Not only that shipping is free for the $6 and $9 a month package. If you’re doing the $1 blade then shipping is $2 extra. Dollar Shave Club is based out of California and founded by two guys Mark Levine and Michael Dubin (Mike in the video). Mike actually came […]
A New Fathers Guide to Diapers
There are a good number of books out there on this crap(drum roll), but most people just Google this stuff, and it brings them to a website that has the information. So here we are providing you the information based on my own personal experience in the diaper lab here at the institute. This is the man’s guide to changing diapers or a practical guide or real-world guide cause they never tell you the nitty- gritty in those self help books. And just for your own edification – diapers all use the same chemical to absorb wetness. Acrylic acid is a key component of super-absorbent polymers […]
Happy New Year 2013
Well, we’ve made it to yet another year here on the Institute’s website. This year we’ve really accomplished jack squat. Next year, I suspect will be similar with one exception – if I don’t get any writers who want to help, I may shift focus slightly to fatherhood since this year I became one. So my New Years’ resolution would be to post a bit more than last year – and that should be pretty easy right? I think we didn’t even get once per month. Next, would be to post more original content – I think this is where […]
Waterspouts captured on video
From here. From the this is damn cool archives: Over the weekend, a freighter closer to the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan caught a rare sight of not one but five waterspouts above the lake. The National Weather Service recorded a total of nine waterspouts cropping up with winds around 45 miles per hour. Freighter captain and storm chaser Eric Treece was able to film a dense grouping of the waterspouts. MLive.com has more from Treeceon the water formations he saw Saturday and his experience with them over the years: “Being out here, I get a really good view of thunderstorms over […]

When it comes to cooking, adding bacon to everything automatically makes things better. It’s man law. One of the things that you absolutely need to do as a man is to know how to cook amazing dishes for your friends, your family, and if you’re dating, to impress your woman. So here is what you’ll need: 4-5 Strips of bacon (your choice of flavor) 1/2 […]
